New Hematology and Medical Oncology Physician Joins UMH

Uvalde Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce the addition of medical oncologist and hematologist Dr. Matthew R. Peterson. Dr. Peterson joins the team at Kate Marmion Regional Cancer Medical Center (KMRCC) in Suite 200. He joins radiation oncologist, Dr. Charles Brooks, who treats patients in the neighboring Suite 100.

Dr. Peterson earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at United States Military Academy in West Point, New York and obtained his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Texas. He went on to become board certified in internal medicine and completed a fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio.

Peterson served in the military from 2011- 2022 and discharged at the rank of Major after 12 years of honorable service.

“Having Dr. Peterson join our full-time medical staff is a huge asset. He brings a wealth of experience, expertise, and compassion to our cancer care team. He will work closely with patients, referring physicians and families to provide excellent cancer care close to home,” said hospital chief medical officer Dr. Sameta Sosa.

Dr. Peterson has ten years of experience in hematology and oncology in numerous roles such as quality assurance manager, staff physician, and medical director at San Antonio Military Medical Center. He has also served as Officer in Charge at BAMC Hematology/Oncology Clinic and associate program director for BAMC’s fellowship program. Dr. Peterson is also familiar with the Uvalde community as he has served as a locum physician at KMRCC since March of 2023.

“Our goal for our community goes beyond simply treating the cancer, but rather, to care for and meet the needs of the patient, as a whole. The addition of Dr. Peterson allows family and friends to be close and part of the treatment strategy,” added chief executive officer Adam Apolinar.

Dr. Peterson is married and has four children, two daughters and two sons. In his spare time, he enjoys coaching his boys’ football team and leading a men’s Bible study.

The hospital will host a community open house on Tuesday, January 23 from 4:00 to 6:00PM to meet Dr. Peterson and his staff at the office, located at 1195 Garner Field Road, Suite 200.
